Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support, Inc. was founded in June of 2012 by Alicia C. Simpson MS, RD, IBCLC, LD. While working with patients who were suffering from complications of lifestyle related chronic diseases such as Type II Diabetes and Cardiovascular disease she became attuned to the fact that preventing chronic diseases and their complications is a healthier and easier path than attempting to reverse 50+ years of damage to the body. Alicia founded Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support on the foundation that preventative care through nutrition education and family centered clinical breastfeeding support is one of the hallmarks to helping to create a healthier community. In working with families from varying socioeconomic backgrounds Alicia also observed a wide disparity in the type of healthcare services provided to low-income families versus the average well-insured middle class family. To help eliminate this disparity Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support offers free nutrition counseling, family centered breastfeeding counseling, access to prenatal and postpartum exercise classes and assistance for mothers returning to work or school that want to continue breastfeeding to not only low-income families who generally qualify for programs like WIC, TANF and SNAP but also for the working poor who are barely making ends meet, are still low-income but no longer qualify for government assistance due to income eligibility. Pea Pod’s income eligibility criteria is one household member higher than that of typical government assistance programs allowing us to make a long-term difference in the lives of more Georgia families. Since 2012 Pea Pod has, to date, served over 450 Georgia families and has a current breastfeeding initiation rate of 93% among mothers who sought prenatal breastfeeding care through our Healthy Families Initiative.
