Ever been out and about and gotten so hungry you can’t see or think straight? No one is ever there best self when they are hangry, that’s why snack bars are a great option to have in your bag at all times. Not just any snack bar though, you want a bar that has the perfect combination of protein and carbs, limited added sugars, and minimal ingredients. You always want a snack that includes protein and carbohydrate so that you feel satisfied and have sustained energy afterwards. Sometimes it just isn’t reasonable for us to be able to pair some carrots and hummus, or peanut butter and apples for a snack, and that’s okay. That is why snack bars are a great option to keep in your bag when you are out and about, and here are a few tips for making sure you are able to make the smart choice when choosing your bars.
1. Protein, Protein, Protein.
Protein is SO important to have in a snack because it will help keep you feeling satisfied for longer. You want to choose a bar that has a good source of protein in it such as nuts/seeds, pea, whey, egg, collagen, or rice protein. Bars with good sources of protein include EPIC bars, RXbars, Oatmega, Aloha, Dang, Primal Kitchen Nut & Seed, Power Crunch, Bullet Proof Collagen bars, Square Organics, and GoMacro bars. Many companies have now started making protein versions of their bars such as Larabar, Kind Bar, and Nature Valley. While the regular versions of these bars aren’t bad options, try the protein ones if you find yourself still feeling hungry after eating the other version.
2. Look for bars with a minimal ingredient list.
You know how you feel when you see how long your child’s Christmas list for Santa is? You don’t want to feel that way when reading the ingredients for your snack bar. Fewer is always better! Bars like RXbars, EPIC bars, and Larabars are great examples of this and only have 2-6 ingredients max. It’s bonus points when you actually know what each of the ingredients in a bar is.
3. Watch out for added sugars.
While sugar is sugar, we want to limit our consumption of added sugars to 10% or less of our daily caloric intake. This can add up, so we don’t want our snack bar to be a large contributor. You can look for ingredients such as molasses, syrups, honey, agave nectar, and things that end in -ose like fructose and sucrose to know if the sugar is from added sugar. Many bars, like Larabars, EPIC bars, and RXbars are able to have no added sugar by naturally sweetening their bars with dates. Other bars such as Oatmega bars and Dang bars are able to have lower sugar by using stevia extract and monk fruit extract, which are naturally occurring sugars that are sweeter than regular sugar and therefore able to be used in smaller does.
So next time, don’t get caught hangry without one of these snack bars. Just remember to look for protein, minimal ingredients, and limited added sugars when you are picking out your bar.
